When the PL 17 was introduced in 1959 it wasn't just odd, it was an incredibly efficient and capable car. Power came from an 850cc boxer 2-cylinder, which was good for about 40 hp. For the size of car this doesn't seem like much power, but the car was surprisingly lightweight and the odd looking design was quite aerodynamic.

The Panhard PL17 was a highly regarded car when it was new and remains so today, providing a much more interesting proposition to its now ubiquitous contemporary, the Citroen DS. Via the Panhard owners club, John found an engine from a PL 17 rather than a Dyna Z, which he rebuilt and modified to the more sprightly Tigre specification. On the previous engine, John had installed an SU carburetor of the type fitted to the original Mini, which was an improvement over the leaky Panhard version, and he wanted a similar setup.

The PL 17 was the first Panhard model developed with guidance from Citroën. After the French giant got involved with the smaller manufacturer in 1955, all its models continued unchanged until the PL was introduced in 1959.
