Designed by Alison Smithson (1928-1993) and Peter Smithson (1923-2003) as social housing, created to help meet the acute need for homes after the devasting World War Two bombing, a situation exacerbated by a post-war baby boom. The project was commissioned by the Greater London Council, the 'GLC'.
